We are delighted to be one of four finalists selected for the Cascades Female Factory design competition, recently announced by the Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority.

The competition is for a new History and Interpretation Centre that will ‘celebrate the significance and values of the World Heritage-listed Cascades Female Factory and the contribution of convict women throughout the history of colonial Australia to the present day.’

Out of 50 expressions of interest, approximately 20 were invited to submit design concepts for the second stage. Four have been selected by the jury to continue to the final stage. We are in good company, however, Liminal were the only local architects shortlisted.

The team is thrilled to be a part of this project that celebrates the historic significance of the Cascades Female Factory and the contribution of convict women in the history of colonial Australia

Beginning with a two-day intensive workshop, Liminal collaborated with Norwegian studio Snøhetta, landscape architects Rush Wright and conservation specialists Bryce Raworth. Reinforcing our team motto, ‘many minds make enlightened work’, outcomes from this formed our conceptual springboard shaping the team’s response to the project.

It is fantastic to see both jury and architects shortlisted comprising strong female leadership in architecture, museums, heritage management and the arts.

Shortlist:

  • WelshMajor (NSW)
  • Hector Abrahams Architects with Neeson Murcutt (NSW)
  • Aileen Sage Architects with Jean Rice Architects (NSW)
  • Liminal Architecture (TAS) with Snøhetta (International)

Jury:

  • Catherine Baudet, Director Ferrier Baudet Architects
  • Janet Carding, Director Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery
  • Justine Clark, architectural editor, speaker and researcher
  • Shelley Penn, Director Shelley Penn Architect
  • Penelope Evatt Seidler AM, Director Harry Seidler and Associates

Submissions for the final stage of the competition close on 18 October 2017 with the winner announced in November.
