Mathers Place is a Hobart icon but was in much need of a boost to restore it to its former glory. In collaboration with the Hobart City Council a new signage strategy was developed to give a facelift to the mixed-use precinct.
Creative concepts drew on the original drapery shops deriving the shape and form of ribbon and textiles including an interactive and playful steel barrier that intricately weaves itself in and out of the ground towards the main sign. Magnetic letters are placed out each day for the public to make words and sentences.
A colour palette was also defined to assist navigation to represent community centres including Mathers House (blue), Criterion House (purple) and Mathers Place (warm grey). Mathers Place has shifted from a usual thoroughfare into an inviting and dynamic community hub.
